You've never seen business like this. Employees of local retailer Appliance Factory Outlet have banded together to raise almost $20,000 for the annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in the Rocky Mountains.
Through the generous support of local businesses and Denver celebrities like Nuggets coach George Karl, they've been able to organize "Rhythm and Boobs," a silent auction and live music event being held at Gibby's Sports Saloon on Sunday, June 5 from 4 to 8pm.
Gibby's saved the event from utter catastrophe; it was to beheld at Rhythm's Bar and Grill in Centennial, Colo., but when the club unexpectedly shutdown on May 24, Drako and his team were at a loss as to where to hold the event. With a little luck and a lot of generosity, they found a new place within a matter of hours thanks to Gibby's marketing manager, Garrett Ladd.
Drako says George Karl will be making an appearance at the June 5 event as well as two of the Broncos cheerleaders. Karl donated a round of golf at Cherry Creek reservoir and dinner for six at his place for the silent auction.
The team organized itself to raise a grand total of $19,800,inspired by lost loved ones and friends and family still struggling with breast cancer. One walker on the team and wife of Appliance Factory Outlet's CEO,Linda Ewing, struggled herself with breast cancer. Their biggest inspiration, however, was Avon Walker team captain George "Mac" McLennan's late wife, Susan McLennan, for which they named their team Suzy's Crew.
Susan lost her battle with cancer earlier this year. She was diagnosed in 2007, right after her husband, Mac, had been deported to Scotland. Her weekly chemotherapy treatments and surgeries kept them from being able to see each other. With a prognosis of 12 to 18 months, Susan and Mac went to appeal the immigration case in person so they could be together. He was able to come back to the United States and Susan miraculously fought the cancer for four more years before saying her final goodbyes this January.
The team will be walking a marathon and a half at the official Avon Walk on June 25 and 26 with the hopes that they will reach their$19,800 goal. 100 percent of the funds raised from the team's June 5 silent auction will go directly to the Avon Foundation for Women.
